Take the first step and purchase lock picks...

You can make your own but for very little you can actually purchase lock picks

lockpicking

When starting out in the area of lock picking you must decide where you want to begin. What I mean by that is do you want to learn the basics with a lock pick set that you purchased or one that you made.

Opinions vary as to where to begin as many lock pickers started off with homemade lock picks and will swear that it is how they were able to progress so fast in the trade.

There is another side to the coin and that is that many people are not fans of starting off with homemade lock picks because if they are made incorrectly they may not allow you to learn effectively and cause the user to get frustrated and quit trying.

No matter which way you want to start off you need to know how to begin. The first area is home made lock pick sets. There are a number of manuals and books on the market that will instruct you though the whole process of creating a lock pick set from scratch. Everything from where to buy materials to the templates needed for the picks themselves. There are a few tools that you will need to use so if you do not have them then a cheaper alternative may be to purchase lock picks from a reputable dealer.

Where to get them

The idea that lock picks are hard to order or to find could not be further from the truth. If you know where to buy lock picks you will find a ton. You can purchase lock picks from literally hundreds of locations. Many of these dealers are walk in stores, some are catalog stores and the rest are internet based locations. When looking into where to purchase lock picks you should first familiarize yourself with the laws of where you live. There are a handful of states that will not allow a person to buy or possess lock picking tools or sets without the appropriate lock smith license. I am not stupid and I realize that not all of you looking to get into lock picking are licensed to do so but my hopes are at least that you are doing it for fun and not illegal reasons. Going with that we are more than happy to provide you with the resources you need to find the lock picks for sale that you need to get going.

Take it slowly

You should not just run out and purchase the best lock picks on the market before you are familiar with what is involved in the hobby and know whether or not you truly like it. The cheaper sets, around $17, out there are good enough to get your feet wet but not expensive enough to be a problem if you decide that you do not want to pursue the interest. The fact is that if you love to pick locks and want to upgrade you can always do so and keep the cheap set as a back up. Some people actually pass their first sets on to friends to get the started, that is kind of fun. Start off with the cheapest set you can get your hands on and move forward from there.

Once you decide that you want to purchase lock picks you need to figure out what you want your set to contain. You want your set to be basic enough to be cheap but you need it to have all of the necessary components. There are shortcuts to set like jack knife sets but these are sort of a pain in the neck. Granted they are small and compact enough to carry just about anywhere but they can be a bit to large to keep a hold off while using them. I would recommend that you leave those to people that know how to use them well. You should be looking to purchase a nice five to nine piece set with a carrying case. Carry cases may not seem cool to some of you but when you are trying to keep a hold of multiple small items they are a lifesaver. It is also important to mention that a case keep lock picks stored in a safe way so that they do not get distorted or bent. If you think that you can learn how to pick a lock with paperclips then you can try to carry a pile of them.

I am partial to the simple five piece type of set. The five piece set tends to come with a hook, ball diamond, and rake, plus a tension tool which is pretty much all you need in a beginner set. Lots of sets like to include tons of duplicate things like multiple rakes and a handful of tension wrenches but that is simply not needed. If you purchase lock picks for the first time, specifically pin tumbler lock pick, simplicity is the key. Start off slow and grow you equipment selection as you grow your skill.
