Lock picking books can teach you all sorts of things...
Get the basics from lock picking books and practice
Lock picking is taken up by a certain type of individual. The person that takes
up the art of lockpicking is a person that strives to succeed at whatever they do.
The absolute best way to ensure that you get good with locks is to practice
until your hands and finger hurt and then practice some more. What if you decided
to take it up but know nobody that can help you along as you progress?

Can a book teach you
The answer is that you will have to rely on lock picking books to get you from
the beginning to the end. There are many things that you cannot learn out of
a book and that is partially true with lockpicking. You cannot learn the feel
of the pins in a lock arriving at the shear line from lock picking books but
you can learn what the shear line is. Books can be a valuable resource for the
beginner and even expert lock picker.
What's In A Book
Just as with any other topic there are a ton of books available to buy on lock
picking. The best known one as far as we are concerned is the original great
called the Secrets of Lock Picking. Out of everyone that I have spoken to this
is one of the first and usually the first lock picking books they bought. This
book was so great that it was illegal to sell in a bunch of states. I was too
young to remember the states that you could buy it in but I know that mine was
not one of them. I am not even sure how I got mine but I have had it ever since.
So what can lock picking books teach you? You would be surprised what a good
writer can explain with the written word. Of course the obvious things that
you can learn are the terms. Lock picking has a handful of terms to know. The
terms like shear line, pin, tumbler, pick and so on are not really hard to learn
but if you do not know what the names are then when it explained how to bypass
them or locate them you will be lost. Books are great for that.
You can also learn how to make your own tools. It is always cool to start with
your own homemade set of picks and tension wrenches. It is usually easier to
buy a set of cheap lock picks, and sometimes
less money, but then you lose the fun as well as the intangibles. Most lock
picking books will also include a set of templates and instructions to make
your own tools. Try it, it is a blast.
Try an assortment
As I stated before if you are looking for lock picking books there are a couple that stand out and are worth looking into. The MIT Guide to Lock Picking and
The Secrets of Lock Picking are the two we say to try. Do not forget that you
cannot get everything from a book but what you can get will be helpful. Use
books in conjunction with hard work and dedication and you will move along well.
