Humans by nature do not like to be kept out of things. It does not matter if it is a conversation, a room, or a container. We just like to know what is gong on at all times and with regard to everything. Have you ever asked what was in a box and the person says nothing and that it is empty. You did not believe them did you? You wanted to see inside the box and make sure it is empty.

You are the same person that looks at locked doors and wonders how to get in. Not so much to see what is in the room but just to prove that nobody can keep you out. I am one of those people and that I why I have always been fascinated with how to pick a lock. I love to learn and will continue to challenge myself and so should you.

What is Lock Picking

The first thing we have to do is establish what lock picking is. Basically picking a lock is manipulating a lock and its parts to open it without the use of a traditional key. So where do you begin? The first thing any lock picker needs to know is how the locks work. Since there are so many types of locks and we could not possibly cover all of them we will stick with the typical lock that all of you have at least one of in your home and that is the typical dead bolt lock.

Start slow

If you want to learn how to pick a lock, this is not a bad place to begin. A dead bolt is simply a bolt that when the key is turned is pushed into a hole in the door frame so the door cannot be pushed open. When the key is used again the bolt slide back out of the door frame and back into the lock, allowing the door to swing open. The common deadbolts on the market are cylinder locks. A cylinder lock is nothing more than a plug that turns a cam to move the bolt of the lock.

When we look into a cylinder lock, as we try to learn how to pick a lock, we most often see a pin and tumbler design. That is a good thing because this is a very easy lock design to pick. The gist of a pin and tumbler design is the assortment of small pins of different length. These pins fit into the grooves of a key and are pushed in the correct amount allowing the upper pins to be completely in the housing and the lower pins to be completely in the plug. The point where the housing and the plug meet is the sheer line. Did you think that learning to pick a lock required so many terms? Really there is not so many.

This lock is simple in its design but it works very well to keep people out since you cannot just look at the lock and figure out how long each pin is. That type of knowledge is come up with by doing it and truly knowing how to pick a lock. Continue to read and learn and you will learn how to do it. Of course a lock pick set does not hurt.
