lockpicking

For as long as man has had valuable things there have been people that want to steal it. It is for this reason that the lock was invented. The interesting thing is that as soon as locks were invented to keep people out those very people have spent night and day figuring out how to defeat the lock.

The ability to defeat these locks has led to the invention of even more complex locks only to find that those too can be defeated.

This cycle of invention and ability to defeat it has continued for centuries and will continue to evolve for as long as time goes on. The fascinating thing is that no matter how advanced the locks of tomorrow become there will always be a need for the basic styles of elementary design. These are the ones that hobbyists will continue to enjoy and challenge themselves with. If you are into lock picking for the fun of it and have no illicit agenda we invite you to stick around and learn all you can.

In order to understand how modern lockpicks have evolved we must first look at how the concept of the lock started and how it has grown. After all, the lockpicks we devised to bypass the lock not the other way around. The first known lock was discovered many thousands of years ago and was of a tumbler lock style. It is amazing that it has been around that long.

History of Locks

Over the years there have been a handful of locksmiths that have proven they know how to pick a lock and have developed to exciting things in the world of locks and locking mechanisms. We will discuss these men in no particular order. One such man is Robert Barron who is the father of the double acting tumbler lock. Another man worth mentioning is Joseph Bramah. The funny thing about Bramah is that he invented what he considered to be unable to be defeated by any lockpicking expert. This we know is no the case since if it was we would all have these on our home and safes with no need for additional security.

It keeps progressing

We move on in history to when the key changeable combination lock was developed by a man named James Sargent. This was a great invention for the safe industry and the time lock mechanism Sargent invented is still the design concept used these days in high tech vaults. As stated before, the ingenuity of yesteryear is not completely left back in the past. Samuel Segal invented the first lock that was guarded against jimmying open which led to the real need for a designed and tested lock pick set. Harry Soeref improved the padlock and was able to make it rather affordable and touch as nails.

As time moved on the car thieves decided to find ways to steal cars effectively. The cars were given locks and the one that used their powers for evil instead of good developed a good car lock pick and the techniques to use it.

So how does a person learn the skill of lockpicking these days? Do you have to go to lock picking school? No, but you can if you want. These days you can learn how to do it by buying any of a large assortment of lock picking books or videos. Te tools that need to be used in lock picking are easy to make. That's right I said that you can make cheap lock picks of your own from normal household supplies. Lockpicks are of simple designs and are easy to fabricate.

Make them yourself

Did you know that you can actually make a set of lockpicks out of an allen wrench, a couple of different kids of pins and even a paper clip? You may even be able to come up with your own materials to make lockpicks and if so let us know. Picking locks has always been about thinking. See if you can figure out how some of the popular locks are made and bypassed prior to reading the correct ways. See how well you think.

The hobby of lock picking is fun and rewarding and the development of lockpicks fun. You set a challenge for yourself and work towards achieving it. The only thing we ask is that as you become a more skilled lock picking person that you only use your powers for good and not illegal means.
